Karhulankordi & Kaksi sointia
Karhulankordi & Kaksi Sointia are instruments located in the ECOntainer building near the Mustarinda House, and anyone is welcome to play them.
Karhulankordi is a suspended solid pine wood board with two piano strings stretched across it. The wooden material comes from Karhulankylä’s Woodwork, 45 kilometers from the Mustarinda House, and the wood used is local, sourced near the workshop. Karhulankordi can be played, for example, by plucking with your hands, using thread mallets found in the space, by sliding your finger along the thin threads attached to it, or by sliding copper pipes (softly) against the strings.
Two Chords consists of two sets of copper pipes, each tuned as a harmonic unit—one with seven pipes and the other with four. These create distinct sound worlds that can be played separately or together. The pipes can be played with the thread mallets, either with the thread tips or wooden handles. When played, the pipes may also continue to resonate by softly hitting each other.
On the wall of the space, one will find a Booklet of Forest Play, which contains thoughts and onsets on playing these instruments.
