Metsänheräys
Metsänheräys (Forestwake) awakens the ancient wintery forest into the fullness of summer of Soiva Metsä, on the ridge of Kaunisniemi (Suomussalmi, Finland). The piece crystallizes in the great kantele of the Soiva Metsä, the Pentele, and from it unfolds my designs for instruments, proposals for ways of playing, and a suggestion for the order in which things take place.
As the forest is an ever-alive construction of landscapes and species, also the composition and the performances of it should be in constant, fragile and delicate, unfolding of realizations.
Metsänheräys is a small forest-music booklet with drawings, photographs, and texts. It serves both as a performance guide for the percussion ensemble Awake Percussion — for the Soiva Metsä festival as well as for concert halls — and as an invitation to be present with my instruments and those of the Soiva Metsä, an invitation to be present with the sonic reality of a forest.
The work was created in Cité internationale des arts Paris and Mustarinda Artist Residency in Hyrynsalmi, as supported by Kone Foundation and Teosto Cultural Foundation.
